This black cedar clad house dominates nature on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands archipelago. Designed by studio architects Heliotrope, this contemporary cabin is built cantilevered on stilts so as not to disturb its natural environment too much. The Buck mountain hut is located on sloping ground in a small clearing, and its design was a real challenge for the architects.
Surrounded by tall Douglas firs, this house, dressed in black cedar, fits into the landscape, depending on the season, and has an area of approx. 145m2. It opens with a magnificent view through large bay windows that look into the distance almost endlessly. Waking up with such a landscape through the windows, isn’t it something like a dream? The decoration of the design is simple and leaves the focus on the environment, which is the real value of the house, apart from its successful and beautiful design. Photo: Taj Howe
